Wagatabon Experience ― Reviving a Lost Craft

We are very pleased to introduce you to Wagatabon Experience, the latest private unique experience available to our guests.

Near Yamanaka Onsen once lay Wagatani village, flooded in 1965 to make room for a dam. Its residents crafted chestnut wood shingles and distinct trays with grooved patterns for serving tea or tobacco. After nearly vanishing with the village, a few artisans in Ishikawa have been reviving this simple yet beautiful craft for the past 20 years. One of them, the German-born, Yamanaka Onsen-based woodworker Rabea Gebler, will introduce you to the story of this nearly lost tradition and help you carve your own Wagatabon tray.
